Owlcat Games has revealed their next major project The Expanse: Osiris Reborn during the Future Games Show. The announcement marks a big change for the studio as they move from their traditional isometric RPGs to a third-person action RPG format set in the popular sci-fi universe of The Expanse.
The reveal trailer showcased impressive visuals, zero-gravity environments, and what looks like physics-based interactions that hint at destructible surroundings. According to the announcement, the story kicks off around the Eros incident, a pivotal event in the Expanse timeline.
This new direction is a big step for Owlcat Games, which has built its reputation on isometric RPGs like Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and most recently, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. The studio has grown a lot, now reportedly employing around 500 people.
The Expanse universe, created by authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pen name James S.A. Corey, is known for its realistic depiction of space travel, complex politics, and the mysterious alien “protomolecule” technology. The franchise gained widespread popularity through its TV adaptation, which ran for six seasons across SyFy and Amazon Prime.
Owlcat is developing the game in partnership with Alcon Interactive Group, who hold the rights to the Expanse IP. While the game will likely feature a brand new crew and story, it will tie in with key events from the established timeline.
Space for more sci-fi
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn joins a growing wave of sci-fi RPGs, alongside anticipated titles like the next Mass Effect and Exodus. There’s been a lot of excitement among genre fans. “The industry desperately needs more sci-fi RPGs,” one enthusiast commented.
While no release date has been announced, Owlcat typically reveals games about 18 months before launch. Fans can find more information on the official website for more details expected soon.
