League of Legends creator Whatley says he has climbed to Challenger by playing the tanky catfish as a bot-lane carry, a role the champion was never designed for.
Whatley dropped a full guide explaining how the off-meta pick works. His main claim is bold: Tahm ADC currently has a winrate roughly 5% higher than Tahm top or support.
The logic is simple. Bot lane is filled with squishy ADCs and fragile supports. Tahm Kench shows up with tank stats, sustain through his grey health, hard CC on his Q, and a level 6 ultimate that deletes immobile carries. Most marksmen need several expensive items to function. Tahm just needs to survive the laning phase and start swallowing people.
Whatley pointed to bot lane’s gold and support quest economy as part of why non-traditional picks are doing well. Standard ADCs are weak early, and a stat-stick champion with crowd control punishes that.
He did flag the rough matchups. Early-game lanes with %HP damage give him trouble, naming Draven, Ezreal, Varus, Brand, and Rell, whose shield break is a particular pain. Mobile marksmen can also dodge his all-in window.
On supports, Whatley says he is happy with almost anything. Ivern, Senna, Zilean, enchanters, and engage supports have all worked.
This fits a bigger pattern in current League, where role lines keep getting messier. ADCs are showing up top, mages are appearing bot, and now tanks are taking the marksman slot. Vladimir bot, Fiora ADC, Cho’Gath bot, and Singed bot have all popped up in recent metas.
