CD Projekt Red is aiming to launch The Witcher IV in 2028.
A target window is what a studio is currently working toward. It can move. CD Projekt Red hasn’t published a firm launch date for the game, and no month, quarter, or season has been attached to the 2028 figure.
If it holds, The Witcher IV would arrive roughly 13 years after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt hit shelves in May 2015. That’s not 13 years of Witcher development, though. The studio spent most of that time on Cyberpunk 2077, its rebuilding phase after the game’s rough 2020 launch, and the Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023.
The Witcher IV, previously codenamed Project Polaris, entered full-scale production in November 2024. Before that, it sat in preproduction for years while CD Projekt Red moved off its in-house REDengine and onto Unreal Engine 5 through its partnership with Epic Games.
The game got its big public reveal at The Game Awards in December 2024 with a cinematic trailer. Ciri is the protagonist this time, not Geralt. It’s the first entry in a brand new Witcher saga and the opening chapter of a planned trilogy.
The studio has also stated an ambition to ship all three games in the new saga within six years of the first one launching. That’s a goal, not a promise. It becomes more realistic if the sequels can reuse the engine branch, tools, systems, and assets built for the first game, but each entry still needs new writing, quests, environments, cinematics, and QA.
CD Projekt Red has a lot cooking
The Witcher IV isn’t the only thing in the pipeline. The remake of the original 2007 game is being built by Fool’s Theory in Unreal Engine 5 under CD Projekt Red’s supervision and has been described as following Polaris in the release order. Project Sirius, a different kind of Witcher-universe project, is with The Molasses Flood.
Then there’s Project Orion, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, being driven by CD Projekt Red’s North American operation with teams in Boston and Vancouver. That structure exists so the Polish studio can lead the Witcher saga while Cyberpunk moves forward in parallel.
Given the company’s track record with dates, treat 2028 as a plan rather than a receipt.
