Veteran voice actor Yuri Lowenthal has inadvertently confirmed the existence of a Persona 4 Remake before any official announcement from Sega or Atlus. Lowenthal, who voiced fan-favorite character Yosuke Hanamura in the original game, publicly shared that he won’t be returning for the remake despite his efforts to secure the role.
“I will not be returning as Yosuke for the Persona 4 remake,” Lowenthal stated. “I asked. Maybe I even begged, but they don’t want me to come back.” This statement not only reveals his disappointment but also confirms that a remake of the beloved JRPG is in the works.

The unplanned reveal comes at an awkward time, with summer gaming events just around the corner—the very showcases where these kinds of announcements usually happen. Neither Sega nor Atlus had made the project official before Lowenthal spoke up, though rumors and speculation have been floating around gaming communities for months.
This casting choice looks a lot like what happened with Persona 3 Reload, where almost the entire English voice cast was swapped out when it launched earlier this year. Despite fans loving the original performances, Atlus decided to go with some new voices for the main cast.
Persona 4 first dropped in 2008 on the PlayStation 2 before getting an upgraded version, Persona 4 Golden, on PlayStation Vita in 2012, and then eventually making its way to more modern platforms. The game centers on a group of high schoolers digging into mysterious murders in the quiet town of Inaba, with Yosuke being the protagonist’s first buddy and ally.
Lowenthal has become one of gaming’s most recognizable voice actors, with big roles like Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, Sasuke in Naruto, and tons of other major characters. His ties to Yosuke really resonated with Persona fans, which makes this recasting choice stand out.
No word yet on who might take over for Lowenthal, or if any other original cast members—like Troy Baker (Kanji), Laura Bailey (Rise), and Erin Fitzgerald (Chie)—will return to their roles.
Remake rumors finally confirmed
Lowenthal’s slip lines up perfectly with what fans have been noticing: Atlus is gradually going back and updating its classic Persona games. After Persona 3 Reload dropped and did well, doing a Persona 4 Remake seems like the obvious next move for the company.
While everyone waits for more solid info about what’s planned for the remake, when it’s coming out, or which consoles it’ll hit, this accidental reveal has changed what was just rumors into something real.
