Creative Assembly finally pulled the sheet off Alien: Isolation 2 at Summer Game Fest, dropping the first trailer for the long-awaited sequel to its 2014 survival-horror classic.
The world premiere ended more than a decade of waiting for fans of the original, who had been begging for a follow-up ever since Amanda Ripley drifted into the void at the end of the first game.
The trailer appears to swap Sevastopol Station for a colony setting, a notable shift for a series that built its reputation on tight, claustrophobic corridors. But eagle-eyed viewers spotted what looked like familiar architecture from late-game Sevastopol in the opening shots, and the developers reportedly mentioned a “new station” being part of the game too.
One alien to rule them all
The trailer and the accompanying interview suggest Alien: Isolation 2 is sticking with a single Xenomorph as the main threat rather than going full Aliens with a swarm. That keeps the tone closer to Ridley Scott’s 1979 film and the original game’s stalker-horror identity, rather than pivoting into action territory.
What’s still unknown is almost everything else. Creative Assembly hasn’t confirmed platforms, a release window, whether Amanda Ripley returns, or how open the colony setting will actually be. There’s been no word on VR support, Working Joes, or whether tools like the motion tracker and flamethrower will make a comeback.
The reveal lands at a strong moment for the franchise, with Alien: Romulus hitting theaters in 2024 and FX’s Alien: Earth expanding the universe on television. Survival horror is also in a much healthier place commercially than it was a decade ago, thanks to Capcom’s Resident Evil run and a steady stream of high-profile remakes.
