Factorio version 2.1 has been released. It’s expected to be the factory-building game’s last major update.

The “final major update” label traces back to Friday Facts #440. In that earlier developer blog, Wube outlined its plans for 2.1.

“Final major update” isn’t the same as “no more updates ever.” Ending big feature work doesn’t have to mean the end of bug fixes or technical support.

There’s also talk about what the Czech studio does next, including a possible RPG. Wube hasn’t officially announced a new game.

Development on Factorio started in 2012. The game hit Steam Early Access in February 2016 and reached version 1.0 on August 14, 2020.

On October 21, 2024, Wube released two things on the same day. The first was the free 2.0 base-game update. The second was the paid Space Age expansion, which took the factory off Nauvis and onto Vulcanus, Fulgora, Gleba, and Aquilo.

That means 2.1 closes out roughly a decade of major development, not a quick post-launch patch cycle.

The rocket is not the end

Factorio does have endings. In the base game, you win by launching a rocket. In Space Age, you win by reaching the edge of the solar system. Both let you keep building after the credits.

Newcomers can also tune the game to their taste. Map settings can raise resource richness so ore patches last much longer, though they still run out. Peaceful mode stops enemies from attacking first, but they’ll still fight back if you hit them. There’s also a free demo.

The official mod portal is still packed with everything from small quality-of-life tweaks to full overhauls.
