TL;DR
  • Elden Ring: Nightreign has major performance problems on PCs with the newest graphics cards.
  • Players are seeing framerates as low as 1–5 FPS, and some have had better luck with older driver versions.
  • FromSoftware says to try lowering settings while they look into what's causing the problem.

FromSoftware has officially warned PC players that their newly released Elden Ring: Nightreign experiences significant performance problems on systems equipped with the latest graphics cards. The developer acknowledged the issue in a statement released shortly after widespread reports of unplayable framerates began surfacing.

“We have confirmed that some PC configurations using the latest graphics cards may experience framerate drops,” the company stated. “We are currently investigating the cause.”

The performance issues appear particularly severe for players using newer Nvidia 4000 and 5000 series GPUs. Many users report dramatic drops to 1–5 FPS during basic gameplay movements, rendering the game essentially unplayable even on high-end systems that should theoretically handle the title with ease.

As a temporary fix, FromSoftware has suggested lowering graphics settings from “High” to “Medium” or “Low” and reducing screen resolution. The developer also recommends making sure graphics drivers are up to date. However, player feedback indicates these steps often do little to actually help.

“Unplayable for me even on the lowest graphics. Constant freezing for up to ten seconds,” one player with an Nvidia 5070 reported.

Ironically, some players have actually found success by rolling back to older driver versions, suggesting that the issue may be related to the interaction between the newest hardware, their drivers, and the game.

History repeating itself

The situation brings back memories of FromSoftware’s past trouble with PC launches. The original Elden Ring and earlier games like Dark Souls also had big problems with performance at launch—stuff like lag from shader compiling and choppy framerates. This time around, though, the developer has said more and said it earlier about the technical headaches.

On top of performance issues, Nightreign also misses out on a few basics that most new PC games have, like unlocked framerates, ultrawide monitor support, and support for upscaling tech like DLSS or FidelityFX.

FromSoftware’s ongoing trouble getting things to run smoothly on PC has some players questioning whether the studio has what it takes on the tech front—even though their games themselves are beloved. One frustrated player summed it up: “FromSoft really needs to invest in their tech, or they will end up on the same boat with Bethesda and their engine.”

There’s no word yet on when a permanent fix will drop, but the fact that FromSoftware has addressed the issue makes it a safe bet that patches are being worked on. For now, the people with the newest graphics cards are left wishing they still had some older gear in their machines.
