Deep Silver and 4A Games dropped the official reveal trailer for Metro 2039. The next mainline entry hits PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S this winter.

Players won’t control Artyom this time. The new protagonist is called “The Stranger,” and he’s fully voiced, breaking from the series’ tradition of silent player characters.

The setup positions Hunter as the central antagonist. Previously a Spartan figure from Metro 2033, he now leads the Novoreich, an authoritarian regime that united Metro survivors under fascist rule. According to the official description, this unity “is no peace.” The regime controls through propaganda and fear while rallying the Metro for a new surface war against a “dark and terrifying enemy.”

The reveal trailer leans hard into psychological horror. Footage shows burning villages, children being separated from families and loaded onto trains, and heavy indoctrination imagery. Dark One-like psychic visions appear throughout, suggesting the supernatural elements from previous games remain central to the story.

The trailer’s darkness isn’t accidental. In the accompanying showcase video, the Ukrainian developers confirmed the story draws direct inspiration from real-world events affecting them since 2022. The Metro series has always functioned as political allegory, but this entry appears more explicit in its commentary on authoritarianism and state violence.

Metro Exodus wrapped up Artyom’s story in 2019. This marks the first mainline game without him as the lead, positioning Metro 2039 as both a continuation and a fresh entry point for the franchise.
