An announcement trailer has revealed LEGO Skylines, a city-building game that drops the world’s most famous plastic bricks into the urban planning genre.
The game is being developed by Iceflake Studios, and Paradox Interactive is hosting information about the project on its own website. The name obviously nods to the Cities: Skylines brand, but the announcement stops short of explaining how much the two actually share.
What we know for sure is the premise: You build a LEGO city. The trailer leans into color, humor, and the kind of playful presentation LEGO fans expect. It isn’t another level-based LEGO action-adventure.
Iceflake is a Finnish studio that Paradox bought in 2020. Its best-known release is Surviving the Aftermath, a post-apocalyptic colony builder, so management systems are familiar ground.
The studio is also involved in the ongoing development of Cities: Skylines II. Important detail: Iceflake didn’t create Cities: Skylines or its sequel. Both were built by Colossal Order. Iceflake came in later, first in a support role, and has since taken on a bigger share of the sequel’s continued work.
Not LEGO’s first trip to the building site
LEGO has poked at this genre before. LEGO Creator (1998) let players build and mess with virtual LEGO scenes. LEGO Loco, released the same year, had you laying track, stations, and buildings to make a small working town, it remains a nostalgia favorite. LEGOLAND (2000) went for theme-park management.
What LEGO Skylines does look like is the most direct modern attempt at a proper LEGO city builder, and the LEGO City theme already comes stocked with police stations, fire trucks, trains, airports, harbors, and construction sites.
