Rockstar Games is letting eligible Grand Theft Auto V owners jump to the current-gen versions without paying a cent more. Starting tomorrow, players who own any PS4 version of GTA V or the digital Xbox One version can upgrade to the native PS5 or Xbox Series X/S editions at no additional cost.
That’s a notable shift. When the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S editions launched in March 2022, Rockstar sold them as separate purchases. There were short launch discounts, but no universal free upgrade path. If you wanted the shiny new version, you paid for it.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions of GTA V bring real improvements over the last-gen versions:
- Up to 4K resolution and up to 60 FPS depending on graphics mode.
- Fidelity, Performance, and Performance RT modes, with ray tracing in supported modes.
- Faster loading times and improved textures, lighting, and draw distances.
- HDR support and 3D audio.
- DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support on PS5.
GTA Online also gets a boost on current-gen, including the Career Builder for new and returning players, Hao’s Special Works vehicle upgrades, exclusive performance tuning, and access to GTA+ on supported platforms.
For players who have already bought GTA V on three or four platforms over the past decade, this is a small but welcome shift. A few questions are still open, including how disc owners redeem the upgrade, whether save migration limits apply, and the exact start date in your region, so check Rockstar’s official channels before upgrading your save.
