The review embargo for 007 First Light has lifted, and IO Interactive’s long-anticipated James Bond game is off to a strong start. Early scores are landing in the high 80s to low 90s, placing the game in line with the studio’s acclaimed Hitman 3.

The biggest takeaway from the review wave is that 007 First Light is not “Hitman with a Bond skin.” Reviewers describe it as a cinematic action-adventure game that leans closer to Uncharted, with linear set pieces, third-person combat, and scripted spy-movie spectacle.

IOI’s DNA is still there. Certain levels feature multi-path infiltration, gadget use, disguised approaches, and dense environmental storytelling. Each chapter reportedly includes challenges that encourage replay, plus a separate mode called TacSim for extra content outside the campaign.

But anyone expecting the full sandbox freedom of Hitman: World of Assassination should adjust expectations. The structure alternates between open, exploratory missions and tighter cinematic action sequences.

The original Bond origin story is being singled out as a highlight. Reviewers point to strong character writing, sharp performances, and a tone that channels the Daniel Craig era without copying any specific film.

The most consistent criticism is the driving. Car chases are described as on-rails, lacking a real sense of speed, and used sparingly throughout the campaign. Boss fights also come up as a softer spot, though they aren’t dwelled on as heavily.

Expect roughly 20 hours for the main campaign, with completionists pushing past that thanks to level challenges and TacSim content.
