Elon Musk has been accused of sharing his Path of Exile account and engaging in banned services like Real Money Trading (RMT) and character boosting.
The allegations emerged after players noticed Musk’s in-game character actively completing map runs while he was simultaneously appearing in a livestream on X (formerly Twitter) speaking with German politician Alice Weidel.
Path of Exile, developed by Grinding Gear Games (GGG), explicitly forbids account sharing and purchasing in-game services with real money in its terms of service. These rules typically result in swift bans for ordinary players caught breaking them.
Community members have expressed frustration at the apparent double standard. One player pointed out the irony of someone worth approximately $200 billion still paying for boosting services in a game that’s completely free to play.
“His character was literally mapping while he was on camera elsewhere. What more proof do they need?” wrote one player on a gaming forum.
GGG has remained silent on the matter despite mounting evidence and community discussion. The developer, usually known for strict enforcement of its rules, has neither confirmed an investigation nor announced any actions regarding Musk’s account.
Some players speculate that GGG is deliberately avoiding confrontation with Musk due to his immense influence and history of public feuds. “It’s not worth the Twitter shitstorm it would bring to ban his account,” suggested one community member.
This wouldn’t be the first time a high-profile figure received different treatment in online games. Several gaming companies have historically been reluctant to penalize celebrities and major influencers for rule violations that would result in immediate bans for typical players.
Musk’s gaming adventures have previously drawn attention when he claimed to be an avid gamer despite showing limited knowledge during public gaming sessions. His Path of Exile character reportedly displays signs of being professionally leveled rather than personally played.
The situation highlights the complex challenge game developers face when enforcing rules against powerful individuals whose negative reaction could potentially impact their business.
