Rockstar says GTA VI pedestrians will react when you walk around holding a gun

Strolling into a phone shop with a rifle is apparently no longer a normal Tuesday in Vice City.

TL;DR
  • Rob Nelson says GTA V's hands-off approach to visible guns no longer matches GTA 6's more detailed NPC behavior.
  • Players can reportedly conceal two small weapons, while rifles are visible on the character and only cause problems when actively held.
  • Civilians may back away or fight back during robberies, and police may issue a warning before things escalate.

Rockstar has explained how firearms will work in public spaces in Grand Theft Auto VI, and the short version is that the city will actually notice what you are holding.

Rob Nelson, one of the studio’s senior figures behind Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA VI, said the old approach from GTA V no longer fits what Rockstar wants from its crowds.

“We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now,” Nelson said.

To be clear, he wasn’t talking about 4K or texture quality. “Resolution” here means how many different states the simulation can recognize. Instead of NPCs flipping between calm and panic, they can now tell the difference between a hidden pistol, a rifle slung on your back, a gun held low, and a gun pointed at someone’s face.

Two guns in the pocket, one on the back

According to people who attended Rockstar’s hands-off demo, players can keep two small weapons concealed on their character. Those are handguns or similarly compact firearms, and since nobody can see them, nobody reacts.

Bigger guns are physically visible. A rifle can sit on your back, and that alone reportedly doesn’t cause chaos. Nobody screams, no wanted level appears.

The mood changes when you pick it up. Holding a long gun in both hands makes pedestrians nervous, and they will walk away quickly or change direction. Police may approach and issue a warning instead of instantly opening fire.

Footage shown to press reportedly included Lucia walking into a phone repair shop while armed, with people around her clearly uncomfortable before she aimed at anyone. Another clip from a jewelry store robbery showed a civilian grabbing at Lucia’s pistol during a struggle. One attendee claimed that if the gun goes off in that scuffle, the bullet is removed from the actual ammo count.

That is the real difference from GTA V. In the old game, NPCs already reacted when you aimed at them or started shooting. What they ignored was everything in between, letting you casually jog down Vinewood Boulevard with a minigun out.

The setup borrows heavily from Red Dead Redemption 2, where sidearms sat in holsters, long guns were slung visibly, and the rest of the arsenal lived on your horse. Whether car trunks now play the horse’s role hasn’t been confirmed.

Plenty of details remain open. Rockstar hasn’t said how many large weapons you can carry, where spare guns are stored, whether you can holster a rifle to calm police down, or if reactions change between Vice City and quieter parts of Leonida.
