Rockstar Games has broken its silence after unauthorized Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay videos spread online over the past week, saying the leak hit the studio hard.
“It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time,” the company said.
Rockstar also apologized for how long everything has taken, from finishing the game to sharing details and official gameplay. The studio insisted it’s “nearly there” and confirmed an “extended look” at the game would arrive the following day.
The message ended with a request: don’t spoil yourself, and wait for launch.
The leaked footage was mostly ordinary free-roam material: driving, moving through the world, open-world systems, and a lot of visual detail. Story content appears to have been minimal, aside from a mission that seemed to ask Jason to meet Lucia.
This is the third time a GTA VI rollout has been hijacked. In September 2022, more than 90 clips of an early development build appeared online, one of the biggest leaks in gaming history. Rockstar confirmed an unauthorized third party had illegally accessed its systems, and the case later led to a conviction in the UK.
Then in December 2023, a low-quality version of the first trailer hit social media hours early, forcing Rockstar to drop the official version ahead of schedule.
Reaction to the latest leak has been split. Some fans focused on the developers whose unfinished work went public without permission. Others were less sympathetic toward a company that’s taken preorders while keeping extended gameplay under wraps until the final stretch.
