Early reviews for Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine are reportedly in, and they’re all over the map.

Some of the biggest names in games media handed the PlayStation exclusive middling verdicts. IGN and GameSpot gave it six out of 10. Eurogamer landed on three out of five, while Giant Bomb went lower at 2.5 out of five. Skill Up, which uses recommendation verdicts instead of numbers, issued a flat “Do Not Recommend.”

Smaller outlets went the other way. Digital Chumps gave it 9.1 out of 10, praising its “beautifully brutal combat” while noting it doesn’t reinvent the superhero-action genre. PlayStation Universe gave it a nine. Several other reviews sit in the eight–nine range, pushing the overall average to around seven.

The same complaints keep coming up

The lower reviews circle back to one word: agency. Critics describe a game that constantly tells you where to go and what to do, with a guide line marking your route, big directional arrows when you stray from it, markers pointing to optional challenge rooms, glowing effects on “hidden” chests, and Wolverine reminding you of your objective out loud.

Quick-time events also come up. Some reviewers showed prompts that trigger the action anyway even when no button is pressed.

Combat is the bigger split. Some critics call it repetitive and shallow across a full campaign, with enemies soaking up too many claw hits and specials locked behind cooldowns. Others call it stylish, heavy, and brutally satisfying. Reviewers also seem divided on whether the story or the fighting is the stronger half, with frequent walking-and-talking sections and an “inflated” plot drawing criticism.

Where the reviews reportedly agree is presentation. Production values, gore, Logan’s physicality, and the cinematic direction get consistent praise.
