Nintendo and Monolith Soft have unveiled Xenoblade Genesis, the next major entry in the long-running JRPG series, with a reveal trailer shown during the latest Nintendo Direct. The game is heading to Switch 2 in 2027.
The trailer introduces a brand-new setting, a young female lead, and a noticeably more medieval, high-fantasy look than past entries. Dragons, ornate swordplay, glowing crystals, and what appears to be a school or academy backdrop dominate the early footage.
Then comes the twist. The trailer closes on a wide shot of a world with a horizon that curves upward and multiple sun-like lights overhead, strongly suggesting the action takes place inside some kind of enclosed, artificial megastructure rather than a normal planet.
Xenoblade Genesis arrives after Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and its Future Redeemed expansion wrapped up the so-called Klaus arc that loosely connected the first three numbered games. Series creator Tetsuya Takahashi previously said that storyline had reached its conclusion, while the Xenoblade franchise itself would continue.
The trailer appears to feature a female protagonist, a first for a mainline numbered Xenoblade entry, where male leads like Shulk, Rex, and Noah have headlined past games. A pink-haired character takes center stage in the trailer.
What is still unknown
Plenty remains unconfirmed. The trailer used Japanese voice acting only, leaving fans curious whether the series’ signature British English dub will return. Nintendo hasn’t shown any combat, party systems, or exploration mechanics, and no story synopsis has been released. The exact 2027 release window also hasn’t been narrowed down.
What is clear is that Xenoblade Genesis is shaping up to be one of Switch 2’s biggest JRPG bets, with Monolith Soft once again building a world that nobody else in the genre seems willing to attempt.
