TL;DR
  • Epicseastar exposed for cheating in Jump King speedruns.
  • Fraud uncovered after two years using video splicing.
  • Fake WRs were busted after investigation by speedrun moderator.

Some things are just too good to be true. Epicseastar proved this ancient piece of wisdom true once again. The Jump King speedrunner, who is known for his world records in custom maps, has been exposed for cheating. His fraudulent runs, which stood unchallenged for two years, have been debunked by Twitch streamer ChariotRider.

The cheating method was as elaborate as it was effective. Epicseastar spliced together multiple high-performing game segments to create a fake full run. He then recorded himself pretending to play along with the spliced video, matching his keypresses to the on-screen action. A lot of work, considering the tiny amount of fame he received.

An eagle-eyed moderator on Speedrun.com noticed that the time shown in Epicseastar’s run was mathematically impossible. It wasn’t divisible by the game’s frame rate of 17 milliseconds. But this was only the beginning of the investigation.

Further analysis revealed an abundance of errors in Epicseastar’s WR runs. A missing zero on the end screen, incorrect jump counts, and wonky text alignments all pointed to video manipulation. The final nail in the coffin was an audio analysis that confirmed that the run was a result of patchwork. Epicseastar’s records have since been removed from Speedrun.com.
