Spoiler warning: this article discusses an alleged plot detail from Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Musician Steve Lacy blurted out the biggest secret of Spider-Man: Brand New Day while being interviewed by Valkyrae on a red carpet.
In the footage, Valkyrae reportedly sets up her question with a clear warning, “without spoiling anything,” before asking about Sadie Sink’s mystery character. Lacy answers by naming her as Jean Grey, and goes on to describe her as the movie’s villain.

The clip contains two very different reveals.
The first is that Sink is playing Jean Grey. That has been the most popular fan theory since her casting leaked, so it isn’t exactly a shock.
The second is much bigger: that Jean is the antagonist. Jean Grey is traditionally a hero and a founding X-Man. She only turns destructive when the cosmic Phoenix Force takes hold, the basis of the classic Dark Phoenix Saga.
That said, “villain” is a broad word. Possession, mind control, or a temporary conflict with Peter Parker would all fit.
Sink has been attached to the film in trade reporting since 2025, and her role has been kept under wraps the entire time: standard practice for Marvel, which spent months letting Andrew Garfield deny No Way Home to anyone who asked.
A Jean Grey appearance would still be a big deal. It would drop a major X-Men character into the MCU through a Spider-Man movie rather than a dedicated mutant film. Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner both played the role in Fox’s X-Men series.
Marvel’s loose lips club
Lacy would be in good company. Tom Holland has spoiled so much that Marvel reportedly stopped giving him full scripts. Mark Ruffalo once livestreamed 20 minutes of Thor: Ragnarok by accident.
For now, Sink’s character remains officially undisclosed. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and hits theaters on July 31, 2026, with Tom Holland back as Peter Parker.
