Alveus Sanctuary, founded by Twitch streamer Maya Higa, just faced a heart-wrenching loss. Timber, their 11.5-year-old wolf-dog ambassador, passed away due to complications from emergency surgery. The wolf-dog suffered from gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a rare condition where the stomach flips.
Despite swift veterinary intervention, Timber didn’t wake up from anesthesia. The sanctuary made the tough call to euthanize him to prevent further suffering. This loss has hit the Alveus community hard, with many expressing their grief online.
Timber’s story was one of second chances. Rescued from a difficult situation, he found a new life at Alveus. There, he became not just an ambassador for his species but a beloved member of the sanctuary family.
The passing has left Timber’s companion, Awa, alone. Sanctuary staff decided not to show Awa Timber’s body, fearing it might negatively impact her trust in humans and medical environments. It is a tough decision as the way that animals process loss can be complex.
Alveus is now facing the challenge of helping Awa cope. They’re actively considering options to find her a new companion, recognizing the importance of social bonds for wolf-dogs.
As hybrids between wolves and domestic dogs, wolf-dogs require specialized care that sanctuaries like Alveus are equipped to provide. The story also highlights the legal and regulatory challenges these animals face in many regions, making rescue efforts crucial.
The outpouring of support from the community shows the deep connection people feel to these animals, even from afar. Many have shared their own experiences with pet loss, creating a space for collective mourning and support. Our thoughts are with everyone at the Alveus Sanctuary today.
