TL;DR
  • Frogan first said she hoped U.S. military members would develop PTSD, then stood by her comments on multiple platforms.
  • After a ton of criticism, she put out a new video claiming she "misspoke" and didn’t really mean what she said.
  • The controversy brought a flood of criticism and kickstarted the "uh... based?" meme about her reaction to her own comments.

Twitch political commentator Frogan has issued a clarification following widespread criticism over her statements wishing PTSD on active-duty U.S. military members. In a new video titled. Frogan’s response to Ethan Klein, she claims she “misspoke and didn’t mean it,” even though she had reinforced those same comments multiple times before.

The controversy began during one of Frogan’s livestreams, where she explicitly stated she hoped U.S. military service members would develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Rather than immediately correcting herself, Frogan delivered the statement with conviction, doubling and eventually tripling down on her statement.

When people started calling her out, Frogan stood her ground. During a follow-up stream, she reviewed clips of her original comments, laughed at them, and called them “based”—internet slang meaning something is admirable or agreeable. This reaction led to the now-widespread “uh… based?” meme within streaming communities.

Frogan doubled down further by repeating her stance on social media and shrugging off critics who took issue with her comments about military personnel and mental health.

As criticism grew, Frogan released a new video trying to clear things up. In the video, she said she “misspoke” during her first broadcast and insisted those statements didn’t really show how she feels.

The political streamer has built her audience through association with bigger left-wing creators like HasanAbi and Destiny, sometimes joining panels and political debates. She’s been nominated for the “Rising Star” award two years in a row at TwitchCon and has a following in certain internet politics circles.

This situation points to the ongoing tension between saying things off the cuff on livestreams and dealing with the fallout from controversial takes. The streaming world has seen similar moments where creators say something inflammatory then try to walk it back after public pushback.
