Gen.G have won their first match of the Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage. They beat Invictus Gaming in Round one after falling behind early.
iG won the first fights. Gen.G then took over the midgame and finished the game in around 26 minutes.
Gen.G played Chovy on Akali, Canyon on Qiyana, Kiin on Ornn, and Duro on Nautilus.
iG answered with Rookie on Aurora, TheShy on Rumble, and Jarvan IV in the jungle.
A gank without a kill
Canyon showed up in mid lane early, around level three. His Qiyana didn’t get a kill. She did hit Rookie’s Aurora hard enough to force him back to base.
That recall was costly. Rookie ran Ignite instead of Teleport, so he had to walk all the way back to lane. He lost minions and experience along the way.
Duro also came mid with Nautilus to help Chovy fix the wave. Many expected Aurora to beat Akali early in this matchup. Instead, Chovy came out of lane ahead in farm.
Gen.G didn’t dominate the early game. iG won several early fights and were still ahead around the 15-minute mark.
They couldn’t keep it going. They struggled to turn those wins into towers, dragons, and map control.
Canyon takes over
The game turned when Canyon caught Rookie in mid lane. From that point, Gen.G pushed further ahead.
Canyon also won important Smite fights over neutral objectives. Gen.G reportedly had Dragon Soul at around 22 minutes. That left iG with a bad choice. They could fight on Gen.G’s terms or let the game slip away.
Gen.G’s midgame was clean. Every iG move into the wrong place got punished.
Chovy’s Akali only got harder to deal with as the game went on. His farm and gold lead kept growing, and iG had no answer for him in the late fights.
At one point he died and then bought Mejai’s Soulstealer anyway. That item loses stacks every time you die, so the purchase shows how sure he was that he’d stay alive.
The matchup had plenty of history. Rookie and TheShy were part of the iG roster that won Worlds in 2018, the first title for an LPL team.
Canyon lifted the trophy with DAMWON Gaming in 2020.
What it means for the standings
Since 2023, the Worlds Swiss Stage has worked on a simple rule. Three wins and you advance. Three losses and you go home. Teams mostly face opponents with the same record.
If this was a standard best-of-one opener, Gen.G now sit at 1-0 and iG at 0-1. Neither team has advanced or been knocked out yet.
More pause than play
The broadcast had its own problems. Technical pauses dragged on during the match.
Viewers estimated that draft and pauses together took about 27 minutes. That’s roughly a minute longer than the game itself. No official reason for the pauses has been given.
