A video package played at a Republican midterm convention featured Hasan Piker, and organizers skipped the usual headshot in favor of a very revealing photo.
The image showed Piker shirtless in low-slung clothing, with the waistband of his underwear visible. Part of the picture appeared to be blurred by the presentation itself, even though Piker is clothed in it.
The photo wasn’t just tucked into a broadcast clip either. Footage circulating online showed the same image displayed on the large screen inside the arena, in front of attendees.
The segment looked pre-produced, with music and editing, rather than something dropped in by accident during a live speech. Piker was almost certainly included as a target, not a guest. He didn’t attend, wasn’t invited to speak, and had no connection to the event.
Piker later watched the footage live on stream and reacted to seeing himself half-naked on a Republican arena screen.
Piker is one of the biggest political broadcasters on Twitch, streaming daily news commentary, speech reactions, debates, and gaming. He describes himself as a socialist and backs unions, universal healthcare, higher taxes on the wealthy, and Palestinian rights. He previously worked at The Young Turks, co-founded by his uncle Cenk Uygur.
That makes him an easy visual shorthand for conservative media when attacking “the online left,” even though he holds no position in the Democratic Party and often criticizes its leadership. Whether the convention framed him that way can’t be confirmed from the available footage.
Conventions regularly use video packages to define their opponents, and influencers increasingly show up in them alongside politicians and TV hosts. This one just picked a photo that guaranteed nobody would remember the political point.
