A Luden’s proc bouncing off a minion can eat your Banshee’s Veil before a fight starts

TL;DR
  • A spell cast at a minion can trigger Luden's, and the secondary damage chaining to a nearby champion consumes their Banshee's Veil spell shield.
  • The shield fires automatically with no player control, and its long recharge is delayed further by any champion damage, often leaving it down for the actual teamfight.
  • Riot hasn't called the interaction a bug or announced any change, and some players argue it is fair counterplay for a very strong item.

League of Legends players are once again pointing at one of the game’s most frustrating item interactions, and it goes like this.

An enemy mage throws a spell into the minion wave. That spell triggers Luden’s Companion. One of the item’s extra missiles chains outward and lands on a nearby champion holding Banshee’s Veil. The spell shield pops.

The original ability never touched you. The shield is gone anyway.

Banshee’s Veil gives ability power, magic resistance, and a passive spell shield that blocks the next qualifying enemy ability. The key word is next. It fires automatically, and the owner has zero say in what it blocks.

That means the shield doesn’t care whether the incoming effect is a Blitzcrank hook, an Ashe arrow, or a stray item proc worth a fraction of your health bar. Whatever arrives first, it takes.

Once consumed, the shield goes into a long recharge, commonly cited at around 40 seconds. Taking champion damage delays that recharge. So a player who loses the shield to an incidental proc can easily be sitting at four seconds remaining, eat one tick of poke, and watch the timer jump back to the top.

The end result is the classic scenario: you buy Banshee’s specifically to eat a hook or a pick ultimate, and the item is unavailable when the fight finally happens.

Players report similar behavior from other sources, including Hextech Rocketbelt’s missiles, Statikk Shiv’s chain damage, and Smite. Those cases are worth testing on the live patch before treating them as identical, since League‘s spell shields don’t all follow the same rules for item damage, area effects, and damage over time.

Not everyone wants it changed

The counterargument is simple: standing next to a minion wave inside Luden’s bounce range is a positioning mistake, and the enemy still had to spend a spell to strip you. Banshee’s is also genuinely oppressive against champions whose entire game plan is one telegraphed ability, which is why blanket immunity to small damage would be a big buff.

Popular suggestions floating around include blocking item procs from triggering it, adding a minimum damage threshold, only consuming the shield on hard crowd control, or making it a manual active like the old Edge of Night. Each has obvious problems, and Riot has removed items before for exactly this kind of balance headache, Crown of the Shattered Queen being the obvious example.

For now, nothing has changed. Riot hasn’t confirmed the interaction as a bug, hasn’t announced a fix, and hasn’t put Banshee’s Veil on any public rework list.
