Matthew “FormaL” Piper was in the middle of a dominant sniper run on stream when his Call of Duty account got hit with a ban notice.
The clip shows FormaL playing the beta on what viewers called the smallest map in the rotation. Tight lanes, buses, constant close-range fights. He is quickscoping through all of it, sprinting, sliding, and stringing kills together at a pace that made the scoreboard look broken.
Then, in the final seconds of the clip, the ban screen appears.
Nothing in the footage shows anything close to obvious cheating. He misses shots. He walks past enemies without noticing them. One kill through smoke that looked suspicious at first glance is explained by the enemy nameplate showing up on screen.
The exact wording of the notice wasn’t clear to viewers, and no reason was ever given publicly. That hasn’t stopped the theories. The most popular one is simple: he was killing lobbies so fast that opponents spam reported him, and something automated pulled the trigger. Others suspect an anti-cheat false positive or a beta-specific bug. None of that has been confirmed.
Unbanned, apparently
The good news is that the block didn’t last. Multiple posts pointed to a Call of Duty community management account confirming FormaL had been reinstated shortly after the clip went viral.
For context on why the ban surprised people: FormaL is one of the most decorated controller FPS players ever. He won the 2017 Call of Duty World League Championship with OpTic and a Halo World Championship in 2022, also with OpTic. World titles in two different shooters.
Call of Duty enforcement runs through RICOCHET Anti-Cheat, which mixes server-side analytics with a kernel-level driver on PC. Actions range from restricted matchmaking, often called a shadow ban by players, to temporary suspensions, and full account bans. Which one FormaL received was never clarified.
