Dplus KIA mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su has sent a personal congratulations to Rasmus “Caps” Winther after the G2 star’s induction into Riot’s League of Legends Hall of Legends, and he used it to admit that Caps once completely broke his brain.
“First time I met Caps was at Worlds 2019,” ShowMaker said. “I still remember being completely thrown off by Caps’ roams and losing that series. After that you became a huge source of inspiration for my own playstyle. I have tremendous respect for you.”
The series he’s talking about is the 2019 World Championship quarterfinal between G2 Esports and DAMWON Gaming. DAMWON took game one. G2 then took the next three and closed it out 3-1, sending the young Korean squad home in their first-ever Worlds appearance.
What stuck with ShowMaker wasn’t laning. It was Caps leaving lane. Roaming, the fact of moving away from mid to jump on a side lane, set up an objective, or invade the enemy jungle, was the core of G2’s 2019 identity, and ShowMaker admits he had no answer for it.
That G2 roster of Wunder, Jankos, Caps, Perkz, and Mikyx was arguably the best Western team ever assembled. They won both European splits, took the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational, beat T1 in the Worlds semifinal, and only fell at the last step, getting swept 3-0 by FunPlus Phoenix in the final.
Revenge served in under 20 minutes
The story didn’t end there. One year later, DAMWON came back and knocked G2 out of Worlds 2020 in the semifinals, also 3-1, with a brutally fast closing game, and even threw G2’s own celebration back at them. DAMWON then beat Suning 3-1 to win the Summoner’s Cup, bringing the title back to Korea.
Which makes the message land harder. ShowMaker is a world champion, a multiple-time LCK winner, and a finalist at both MSI 2021 and Worlds 2021, and he still points at that 2019 defeat as a moment that shaped him.
Riot has framed the Hall of Legends around influence and impact, not just trophy counts. ShowMaker’s tribute is about as clean an example of that as you’ll find: an opponent who lost, remembered exactly why, and rebuilt his own game around it.
