Kai Cenat died holding a shield instead of a totem and ended iShowSpeed’s Hardcore Minecraft run

Hours of raid farm work were erased by one wrong item in the wrong hand.

TL;DR
  • Kai Cenat was killed by an apparent Vex while building a raid farm, with a Totem of Undying in his hotbar but a shield in his hand.
  • The totem only works when held, so it never triggered, and the shared Hardcore rules wiped the run for both players.
  • Speed exploded at Kai on stream, while the overlay showed 7 deaths for Kai and 15 for Speed across their attempts.

Kai Cenat and iShowSpeed lost an hours-long Minecraft Hardcore attempt because Kai was holding the wrong item at the worst possible moment.

The pair were building a raid farm, a setup designed to give them a steady supply of Totems of Undying. Ironically, that farm is exactly what killed the run.

While working on the build, Kai came under attack from an apparent Vex, the small flying raid mob summoned by Evokers. Vexes fly straight through blocks, so walls do very little to stop them.

Kai had a Totem of Undying in his hotbar. He was holding a shield. He appeared to freeze after the first hits, didn’t complete the offhand swap, and died.

A totem only works if it’s in your main hand or offhand at the exact moment you take fatal damage. Sitting in your hotbar or inventory does nothing. Had Kai been holding it, the totem would have blocked the killing blow and given him a chance to run.

Because the two were playing under shared Hardcore rules, one death ended the attempt for both of them. No respawn, no continuing.

Speed didn’t take it well

Speed immediately erupted, shouting at Kai over the item choice and for not listening during the attack. Kai mostly sat there in silence and took it.

The challenge itself is far harder than a normal Minecraft run. Instead of just killing the Ender Dragon, the two are targeting the Dragon, the Wither, an Elder Guardian, and the Warden in a single no-death world. The Warden alone can delete fully geared players in seconds, which is why totems were the priority in the first place.
