Playground Games says Fable’s main quest will run 15-20 hours

TL;DR
  • Playground Games estimates Fable's main quest at 15-20 hours, with another 15-20 hours of side content and open-world exploration.
  • That puts the conventional main-plus-side experience at roughly 30-40 hours, before any of the open-ended "life systems."
  • Earlier Fable games clocked in around 12.5-15 hours for the main story, so the reboot's campaign would be the longest yet.

Playground Games has finally put numbers on Fable‘s size, and they come in three parts.

Speaking to Polygon, associate game director Will Kennedy broke down what players should expect from the reboot.

“We have around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,” Kennedy said. “And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.”

Do the math on the first two figures and you land at roughly 30-40 hours for the main story plus most optional quests and exploration. That number doesn’t include anything Playground files under “life systems.”

When someone in the room suggested Fable was “not a huge game,” fellow associate game director Craig Littler pushed back.

“As Will just said, you can literally play it forever if that’s what you want to do,” Littler said.

To be clear, “limitless” doesn’t mean endless quests. It refers to the repeatable, systemic stuff Fable has always been known for: chatting up villagers, relationships and marriage, buying houses and businesses, building a reputation, and watching Albion react to whether you play saint or menace. Those systems have no fixed endpoint, but they aren’t handcrafted missions either.

How that compares to old Fable

A 15-20 hour campaign would actually be on the long side for this series. HowLongToBeat’s user-submitted data puts the original Fable‘s main story around 12.5 hours, The Lost Chapters near 15, Fable II around 13, and Fable III around 13.5.

Lionhead’s games were never marathons. The hours came from messing about, replaying with different moral choices, and seeing how the world treated you.

Playground, best known for Forza Horizon, took over the franchise after Microsoft shut down Lionhead in 2016. The new Fable was announced in July 2020, is set once again in Albion, and is currently set to release on February 23, 2027, on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with Game Pass on day one.

One caveat: these are developer estimates, not measured completion times. Difficulty, exploration habits, and how much you like talking to NPCs will move that number in either direction.
